When it comes to smart items in my wardrobe, I don’t like to mess about. Why? Because it’s important to have a good collection of reliable outfits that are always ready for me to wear. What does that achieve exactly? It saves me valuable time and makes my life run better. And that’s why I call them smart items.

How do smart items really work? Well, I call them ‘smart items’ for a very good reason. They are not like the regular items in a wardrobe. They work much harder than that and if you don’t have any smart items in your wardrobe then you could be wasting your time every single day. Here is why.
Smart items work for you, not against you. They can be relied upon at any moment. The right items give your wardrobe greater balance and they make it much easier and quicker to get ready. Now who doesn’t want a bit of that in their life?
Smart items will support you whenever you are in a rush because they require less consideration. And they have literally formed the backbone of my entire wardrobe now. This is absolutely why I call them my ‘smart items’. Because they are always there and are always just what I need in that moment.

So what exactly is it about this suit? well, do you remember the original baggy suit from spring/summer? All that softness that we grew to love and wore so much. That spring/summer baggy suit really helped us bring balance to our new world of hybrid work. It was perfect for our WFH days and our WFO days too and lets not forget how presentable we all looked in zoom calls, right. Life definitely got a whole lot easier, once the baggy suit came into our world.
This new smart suit wants to support all that and more. It understand where we have come from and where we are heading. It has a much more realistic and much more genuine approach to feminine tailoring, just like the baggy suit and it is definitely going to help maintain a more comfortable work life balance too.
There are no tight fittings and over-exposure. There are no uncomfortable body hugging panels to constantly adjust every time you move a slight inch. There is no suffering for your natural body shape, gender or identity going on here and yet it still looks like some damn fine tailoring at play. It has something else too. What else does it have?

I have it on good authority that the best way to dress a fine suit is with the subtle art of fine accessories, like ties. And thankfully ties come in all shapes and sizes. So, if you do want to take it up a knot (pun totally intended), then simply level up your power suit with an elegant tie to match.
Have you ever been into a tailor for a tie? Would you know where to start or not? Well, the good news is that any good tailor or purveyor of suits and ties has a fine and often prized selection they are just dying to show off. They can often cater to any price point too, so creating your own collection of fine subtle accessories is going to be a fairly easy affair. A perfect selection of matching ties will defiantly take you and your gorgeous suit right on up to the next fine level.
Tip: If you have not really worn a dress tie before then I recommend you go and try as many on as you can and at a number of retailors. Aim for as many different styles, shapes, colours and price points that you can get your hands on. To gain a better understanding. It will give you a good feel for what you like and what you don’t. Test for a good colour match to your skin tone and own personal taste. There is so much choice out there, so it really is up to you and how you feel. If you are still a bit unsure then ask a professional. Tailors and tie shops are very particular and know their colours and craft well. They will be more than happy to parade their knowledge before you.
The soft as silk look
For a softer neckline look towards cravats or neckerchiefs. Have you evr tried one on? If not them now is the time to go have some fun. You really can’t go wrong with a silk neckchief or cravat because they are shorter and easier to tie. They also have a much softer feel around the neckline, but still give a seriously strong finish. Colour is once again all about you, your own personal taste and preference. So, there really is no right or wrong here, it’s all about good and simple styling. Go for a subtle pattern if you are not completely sure or even try out a soft pastel shade. It really is all up to you. There is such an open, vast and very varied amount of choice and all will give you that perfect finish to power up your suit.
Tip: If you think you handle taking it up another notch, then go for a matching handkerchief too. Why? Because matching your neck scarf or tie with a carefully folded handkerchief is another level of coordinated perfection and I absolutely love it.
Putting your best foot forward
Just like ties, the shoes you choose to wear with your power suit need a little extra thought. There is no point putting in all this effort to drop the ball at the last detail. Do you own a smart pair of shoes? Would they match up to your new look or will they let you down immediately?
Shoes are an important factor in any outfit. People check your shoes more often than you think, so choose well. Your shoes should not stand out as the main event, they are a supporting role and need to be clean, well cared for and in presentable order and never demanding of all the attention. That is what the suit is for.
Tip: As a general rule, A black or grey suit usually commands a black shoe and a blue suit is best paired with dark brown or tan shoes. These are basic guidelines so try not to mix them up too much. If you feel more confident then add your own personal touches by all means, but be warned this is no time for novice over confidence or irrational uncoordinated behaviour. The idea is to let the suit do the talking and your shoes do the walking. Remember your shoes are the supporting act, not the star of the show.
